Aaaand we're back!

Hi everyone!

Interesting goings-on last week, eh? As the old saying goes, if your soulless, unfunny, outsourced, pathetic piece of over-exposed crap is sinking with the ship, starting suing people.

Or something like that. I forget.

What are the odds that a vintage reprint and a new strip have similar gags on the same day? 'tis fate...kismet!

The Daily Comics Review is Dead, Long Live The DCR!

Hello Daily Comics Review Devotees!
I write to you with a heavy heart.  If you haven't noticed already, all of the pictures from every review over the last four years is gone.  We had been hosting our pictures on Photobucket on a Pro account, but we received a notice last week that 3 of our pictures had been removed for copyright infringement, and then our account was permamnently banned several days later.  I have been in contact with Photobucket to try to find some other solution, but they haven't responded to my emails for over three days now.  For all intents and purposes, The DCR is dead.

What was our action that was so offensive to warrant such destruction?  Our infringement notice came from Paws Inc., which if you don't recognize is the corporation that controls Garfield and Jim Davis' other creations.  We probably should have been more cautious about posting his work, as he has a reputation (or at least Paws Inc does) for extreme heavy handedness with his properties on the internet.  I try not to live my life in fear of retribution though, so I never put those restrictions on my writers.  My basic understanding of copyright laws had me thinking our posting were covered under fair-use, but Photobucket and Paws Inc. seem to disagree.

So, where do we go from here?  My amazing writers still plan to continue on, undaunted by their archive of work being obliterated, but I have to admit extreme heartbreak over the loss of all this content.  I operated the DCR alone for almost a year before adding new writers, and though I have been less publicly involved lately  I still feel very connected to what happens here.  So I am here to ask you fans, what do you think we should do?  We are looking in to independently hosting or finding another company that would work with us instead of just banning us if there are any future issues.  We have some ad revenue saved up but would probably need additional dollars.  So if you love the DCR and want to see it survive, now is the time to speak up.  If you feel so inclined we do have a Paypal donation button and all monies collected go directly toward this site.

Finally, thank you to my writers and my readers for the last 4 years.  I started this blog because I loved comics and my job as so boring that I had time to run a blog from work any nobdoy would notice.  As my career has become more demanding I've reached a point where I hardly have time to read any comics, but I always check out the latest update here.  It's been a great 4 years, lets see what the future has in hold for us!

Spousal Abuse Sunday

Not very many good or bad comics today so it'll be a quick post today. Next week I'm hoping to do a post with older comics and such. But onto today's...

Yeah, I guess that's what toes look like--when covered with socks and shoes.

....Kind of an overreaction on Herb's part here. "Herb, can you help me with something?" "Damn it, woman! I'm tryin' to sleep!" "You can go back to sleep after you help me." "All right I'm coming. This better be important, woman! You know how I get when I don't get my ten hours on Sunday."

Gladys does need to get out of the house. I don't think we've seen her out of the house in years. She should still be able to get out without having one of the walls removed.

Let's Take A Time Machine Back To Wednesday!

Hey everyone, Zachary the Stupid Inventor here with Wednesday's comic review on Friday.... I've been busy the past two days with job interviews, so sorry for the delay! Let's begin, shall we?

Drabble: There's only funny strips this week, so there isn't much for me to write about them. I chose this strip because I've tried developing a similar device for Stupid Inventions, so it just made me laugh.
Chuckle Bros.: I complain about this strip a lot, usually because of the weird way they stage their strips because the it's distributed in both single panel and 3 panel formats, but today's was a good one, at least in my opinion, so I figured I should post it to balance it out...

Off The Mark: This gag is just genius, love it!

Pearls Before Swine: This kind of gag is a bit overdone, and I think Pig would have been a better choice for the character to yell and run, but either way the sad gangster with the first aid kit in the last panel makes the gag just so much funnier!

Brewster Rockit: I think I may post Brewster every week, but this "Spacebook"storyline is just plain hilarious, :D

Anyways, that's it for me, see you guys next time!

I Read Mary Worth So You Don't Have To

Mary Worth, 4/12/11
Photobucket

Even though Comics Curmudgeon has the soap strips well in hand, for me Mary Worth is like driving past an automobile accident on the Interstate. I know I shouldn't look, and I really don't want to see what is there, but I can't tear my eyes away.

Last week, and probably even for part of the week before, we watched these hapless losers share lunch at a hospital cafeteria. This week they are in a restaurant. Maybe they'll make it to Starbucks by the end of the year? Oh wait, the Mary Worthverse isn't due to get Starbucks for another 20 years.

Funky Winkerbean, 4/12/11
Photobucket

I'm with Les on this one. I get grossed out by surgery talk too. I watched part of an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" once and turned green too. But I think that was caused by the acting.

Have a great week!

On Katzenjammer

There are a lot of strips out there that should've came to an end years ago. Typically it's because their original creator has passed away and the strip is only a shadow of its former self. Very rarely do strips make a rebound after hitting a low point. We're used to see so-called "Legacy strips" just languish on the vine because comic strips polls in newspapers are mainly filled out by older people who like their comics to remain the same and don't understand why that Mouse is so mean to that cute pig. Typically, sooner or later a strips get what it deserves and is sent off to the comic strips graveyard where comic strips enthusiasts and historians can determine if the strip can hold up to other generations. But what if that strip is 114 years old and shows no sign of ending? The Katzenjammer Kids started in 1897 and continues to this day. When its creator, Rudolph Dirks, wanted a vacation after 15 years, The New York Journal refused to let him go. Dirks left anyway and the Journal replaced him with Harold Knerr. Dirks sued the Journal for his creation and in 1914 was granted permission to continue the strip he created, just with a different title. So from 1914 until 1979, Dirks (and later his son John Dirks) wrote and illustrated The Captain and the Kids. They were essentially the same comic strips just owned by different syndicates.

I bring this up because I've read the recent strips. The Katzenjammer Kids is only syndicated to about 50 newspapers and magazines and its current creator, Hy Eisman (who also does the Popeye Sunday strip), is pushing 90. When Eisman decides to call it quits, will The Kids fade into the comic strips graveyard or will King Features keep it going just continue having the longest-running, still-in-syndication newspaper comic strip in the world?

Here is today's strip which I feel is actually better than some of the other strips I've read.
Katzenjammer Kids

Daddy's Home
Daddy's Home
The thought of President Obama stealing someone's wallet and watch made me chuckle.

Baby Blues
Baby Blues
I read in OK! Magazine that the Kardashian sisters grocery shop like Zoe and Hammie.

Get Fuzzy
Get Fuzzy
Get Fuzzy lately has been pretty hit and miss. At least they still have the occasional strip (like this one) that can still get me to laugh.

Momma
Momma
Now, his face indicates that he is awake and just thinking this but I think he is actually dreaming and Mell just forgot that Francis was dreaming. Either way, it's pretty pathetic that Francis sucks at women both in his thoughts and his dreams.

Blondie
Blondie
Gotta love a boss who comes over to your house, uninvited, just to fire you and humiliate you in front of your family, friends and neighbors.

Mark Trail
Mark Trail
Yeah. Peppers are good and all for forcing criminals out of their hideouts but Mark still prefers to use his fists.

Born Loser
Born Loser
My local baseball team is the Kansas City Royals. Interesting fact: Alex Rodriguez makes almost as much as the Royals, combined. A-Rod makes $32 million while the Royals make a combined $36.1 million. It is any wonder that we suck?

No Dopeys

Here I am once again, with a new comic up on my site and new commentary for you! Look upon it.

Bewley
Photobucket
You would think that Snow White would be the chaser figuring in that set, not the dwarves. I can almost guarantee that you'd get a bunch of Bashfuls, Happys, and Snow Whites and maybe two Docs, one Grumpy, and absolutely no Dopeys. Plus whichever other dwarves there were. Anyway, I miss when cereal companies did stuff like this.

Frank and Ernest
Photobucket
Look at the expression on the big guy's face. He's obviously in pain, and all the little one can do is make stupid puns. What a jerk.

Girls and Sports
Photobucket
I'm pretty sure this insinuates that the guy means to eat the girl.

The Madness is Over

March is over, and with it goes March Meekrat Madness, for once. Which means I'm less busy and now able to review things on here again, which I'm sure you're just thrilled about. Anyway, go check out the Meekrat Entertainment Group because last month showed me how angry I am with the lack of interest in my work. Here's comics:

Crankshaft
Photobucket
I thought Crankshaft lived in a room above the garage, like Fonzie? Also, are these two lesbians? I've been wondering that since this whole little storyline started.

Cul de Sac
Photobucket
I like how peg-like that kid is. Also, I'm thinking these two would just love an Asian market. Not only do they have fish with eyes, but chickens and squids with eyes as well! It would overwhelm them.

Frog Applause
Photobucket
I usually hate this strip, but this one made me chuckle.

La Cucaracha
Photobucket
I put this here because I was going to go on a long ramble about Godzilla movies but I figured that no one really came here to read me show off useless knowledge. So yeah, actually uploading this and all that proved to be useless. I do like how they call them films, though.

The Phantom
Photobucket
Way back when, this storyline started and I was still covering this, Mandrake the Magician, and Spider-Man on my own blog. I knew then that by the time this resolution came about, I'd be just so sick of doing daily comic commentary. Still, I'm glad I'm here so I can at least comment on the Phantom finally going after the stupid Python. He's a jerk.

Well, that's it for today. Remember to visit the sites of all of our contributors, and we have Twitters and Facebooks and all that good stuff you can follow and like and all that rigmarole.

Ziggy Wears Boxers?!?!?!?!

Hey everyone, Zachary the Stupid Inventor here with this Wednesday's comic review. Sorry it's late, but I was busy trying to understand the Ziggy conundrum brought up in today's strip:
Ziggy: So Ziggy never wears pants, but he does wear boxers? That makes absolutely no sense! Grr... Ziggy is a weirdly shaped oddball.... and his parrot is a voyeur!
Retail: I've never worked in retail like this, but I can 100% believe this happening. Funny stuff, have I featured this strip before? Maybe once.
Pajama Diaries: As usual, a funny and well drawn strip. I think the cartoonist balances a perfect blend of a cartoony, yet realistic look. Also, there was a storyline about the oldest daughter Amy getting older, and since then she's been drawn looking a bit older, and I think the ability to age a character is amazing, I don't think I can do anything between my regular characters and when they're 80 years old, so bravo!

Rhymes With Orange: Spider-Rabbit, Spider-Rabbit, does whatever a Spider-Rabbit does...

Brewster Rockit: One of my favorite strips, I love how this comic can pack so many gags into a week long storyline, great job! I also like the Pow, Bam, Bif! sound effects...

Anyways, that's it for me, see you next time!

A Drive-By Blogging

No time for love Dr. Jones. Let's get to the strips.

Frazz, April 3, 2011
Photobucket

Is this a sign of self-awareness? I used to find Frazz hilarious, but the preachiness has really started to grate — even though I often agree.

Pluggers, April 4, 2011
Photobucket

After a month or so of adding Pluggers to my subscriptions I have learn that they are fat, poor, old, stupid, and cheap.

Who wouldn't want to be one?

B.C. April 5, 2011

Words I never thought I would say again: "B.C. is getting kind of funny."

That Crook'd 'Sipp

It's Sunday again so let's get to it.

Curtis
Photobucket
I find it odd that Curtis' dad read "Metal Men" comics but I applaud Ray Billingsley using kind of obscure comic book characters.

Ink Pen
Photobucket
Oreos don't come in sleeves. Where do Oreos come in sleeves?

Between Friends
Photobucket
$5 for a candy bar that is thicker but not quite as big as a King Size bar I could get for $1 at my local grocery store. People asking for money has been cut down a lot since putting up two 'No Soliciting' signs.

Funky Winkerbean
Photobucket
Damn it, Batiuk.

Panels from Dick Tracy
Dick Tracy
Oh, Dick Tracy. Retail clerks don't read this strip.

Wee Pals
Photobucket
Damn it, Morrie.

Tiger
Photobucket
What?

Blondie
Photobucket
Sounds like the Heminhaws are made up. If the Woodleys didn't want to go camping with the Bumsteads (and who would?) then they should've just said so instead of creating a fictional family, purchasing a house under the fake family name and creating a backstory for the fake family.

Panels from Barney Google
Barney Google
So the people of Hootin' Holler apparently believe that the wind comes from the clouds. This is good to know when the United States of America invades the New States of America for their precious oil aquifers.

The Born Loser
Photobucket
You can't win it if you aren't in it. I'm shocked Gladys is OK with Brutus wasting his money on lottery tickets and even kind of encourages him to buy more.
